How do I get involved?

The network approach on which GEARNET is founded, is based on the idea that fishing gear conservation research can achieve greater successes and more efficient adoption of effective gear modifications, if we work as a network rather than as isolated, project-based industry-research partnerships. Our goal is, therefore, to build a network with expertise in fishing, fishing gear conservation engineering, fishery management, fishery stock assessment, fishery-related social science and fishing gear extension and outreach.

From December 2010 - February 2011 GEARNET attempted to hold meetings with each groundfish sector, to talk about options for becoming involved in GEARNET. As a result, most sectors submitted proposals to test ideas that they were interested in. The deadline for the first round of proposals was February 28th 2011, and funded projects were announced in March 2011.

Our goal is to work with each groundfish sector and the common pool. Therefore, if funds remain after selecting the first round of GEARNET projects, we will invite additional proposals.

The proposal template and completion guidelines can be downloaded below. If you have a research idea and would like some guidance on completing a proposal, please feel free to contact us; we will be happy to help.

Download the Project Proposal Template and Guidelines.

1) A template for preparing your proposal.

2) Completion Guidelines - with example content to show the type of thing we’re looking for in each field.

3) Selection Guidelines - that the GEARNET Technical Committee will be using when reviewing the projects proposed

If you require any assistance in preparing your proposal, please feel free to contact us.
